            Teachers notes:

This activity creates an opportunity for free discussion. Students work in groups of four with
each person taking the role of a different character- an expert on traffic congestion, a car
company boss, an environmentalist and the owner of a small business.

Students decide on a character and turns to the appropriate role card .They spend a few
minutes reading the information about their character before beginning their discussion. To
make the activity more interesting, they can add some character details of their own

            Task:( Role ply)
Work in groups of four. There is a serious and growing traffic congestion problem in
your city. Discuss the best way of solving this.

Choose one of the following roles:
Student A: an expert on schemes to reduce traffic congestion.

Student B: the Chief Executive of a car manufacturing company.
Student C: a representative of an environmental group.

Student D: the owner of a small business in the city.
Spend a few minutes thinking about your role. Add some notes of your own in your
exercise book to make your character more interesting. Then begin your discussion.

             Role Card One
You are an expert on schemes to ease traffic congestion. You are bursting with ideas about
what can be done. You want to encourage everyone to use local transport like buses and
taxis and you are keen on ‘park and ride’ schemes. Your great dream is for a sky train.

Make more points about your character in your exercise book.

             Role Card Two
You are the Chief Executive of a large car manufacturing company. (You choose which
one). Naturally you don’t want to reduce the number of cars as this will be bad for business.
In fact, your view is there are not enough cars. The more cars, the better!

Make more points about your character in your exercise book.

             Role Card Three

You are a member of an environmentalist group. You hate all cars because of the pollution
and noise they cause. You think they should be banned completely from cities. Everyone
should travel by bicycle. You are a member of a group called ‘Bring Back the Bicycle!’

Make more points about your character in your exercise book.
